The Ryder Cup 2014

The Ryder Cup 2014

  • I always find qualification for the Ryder Cup a fascinating subject. Now it’s early days in terms of automatic spots but here are the current auto spot holders:

    Watson Garcia
    Walker McIlroy
    Kuchar Donald
    Spieth Poulter
    D Johnson Rose
    English Dubuisson
    Dufner Donaldson
    Reed Bjorn
    Mickelson Westwood

Will be fascinating to see how this develops across the summer, but currently there are some familiar names missing on both sides. I’ll aim to keep this thread updated across the summer.

Interesting that Keegan Bradley who is outside of the US automatic spots played well at TPC Louisiana last week, a course that doesn’t naturally suit his style of play. The race is starting to hot up. Stenson also returned to some form in China, which saw him take the spot previously held by Lee Westwood.

This week on the PGA Tour sees American’s Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk, Webb Simpson, Hunter Mahan, Bill Haas and Chris Kirk, looking to kick start their campaigns, whilst McIlroy, Rose and Donaldson will be looking to strengthen their cases.

Sure enough Jim Furyk finished like a train last week and grabbed an extremely valuable 2nd place finish at Quail Hollow, although he’d have loved a Play Off and the chance to grab his first PGA Tour victory since the Tour Championship back in 2010. Jim jumped from 17th to 7th in the US standings. English, Dufner, Simpson, Mahan, Fowler and Simpson all sit outside of the automatic Top 9 qualifying spots pre THE PLAYERS. With Tiger an automatic pick if he’s fit and swinging a club half decently, plenty of ‘notables’ need to improve their performances over the summer months.

THE PLAYERS marked another week of change in the Race for the Ryder Cup. After his win at TPC Sawgrass Martin Kaymer has now moved into the automatic berths where he has been joined by Henrik Stenson, replacing Poulter and Westwood. On the other side of the pond, Jordan Spieth and Jim Furyk cemented their positions with strong performances in Florida. Reed, Mickelson and Zach Johnson make up places 6 to 9 right now.

We should have known it! Miguel Angel Jiminez captures his own Open title in Ryder Cup year! Despite that win and a 3td at Augusta he currently sits just outside of the qualification points, but there are no doubts that once again he’s coming good in Ryder Cup year.

Well Colonial and Wentworth threw up some huge results for a number of players. Although ultimately losing out on the victory at Wentworth, Thomas Bjorn now looks locked into the European Team. McIlroy was always going to qualify, but Luke Donald’s place position also strengthens the probability of him not needing a captain’s pick. From the 2012 team Kaymner, McDowell, Hanson, Molinari, Jiminez and Westwood still have considerable work to do. Over in the United States Adam Scott may have triumphed, but Jason Dufner’s runner-up spot has moved him into the Top 9 automatic spots. Zach Johnson is now ‘outside looking in’ with Phil Mickeslon on the bubble in 9th spot.

Some serious changes after the US Open (as you’d expect). Kaymer now a cert and Rickie Fowler getting himself into the automatic spots in the US team. Some mutterings in the US that his close relationship with Tom Watson would get him a Captain’s Pick anyway.

    Watson Dubuisson
    Walker Bjorn
    Stenson D Johnson
    Donaldson Kuchar
    McIlroy Spieth
    Kaymer Furyk
    Garcia Fowler
    Donald Dufner
    Rose Reed

No huge changes last week but Garcia strengthened his position within the European Team and Harris English edged a little closer to Reed who sits in 9th. Fascinating to see that both Woods and Mickelson are outside the automatic spots; with Tiger making his first competitive appearance at his own tournament this week.

Interesting at Congressional last week that Patrick Reed blew his chance to seal his Ryder Cup spot. Led through 36 to 54 holes; will he regret that missed chance? Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd (who continues to play top golf) are closing in on those Top 9 positions. Na, Simpson, Bradley, Woodland, Haas and Holmes all in-action this week in West Virginia.

Over in Paris defending champion Graeme McDowell could do with a strong result to boost his automatic qualifying chances. His record of defending titles though leaves a little to be desired. Thomas Bjorn is still playing excellent golf and a win this week at a tough Le Golf National course that will suit him will ensure he qualifies. Francesco Molinari seriously needs a win as well. From the 2012 European Team Paul Lawrie, Peter Hanson and Nicholas Colsaerts won’t make it (unless they find something incredible) and Francesco’s spot is seriously doubtful as well, unless he starts to rack up wins and Top 3s.

So G-Mac delivered in Paris and is now breathing down the neck of Luke Donald in the World Points List. Funny how the better players start to come to the boil as we move through summer! In the States there were no significant changes. With the Scottish Open featuring a high quality field this week including Donald, Poulter, Westwood, Molinari, Jiminez and Luiten; expect some significant changes in the week prior to the Open Championship. Both events will be key to qualification across both sides of the pond.
