McIlroy's Coronation Cermony?

McIlroy's Coronation Cermony?

  • Rory McIlroy since his public break-up from Caroline Wozniacki has won the European Tour’s marquee event at Wentworth; captured the Open Championship at Hoylake and then added his first World Golf Championship title at Firestone South last week. McIlroy is now the hottest property in world golf and has re-captured the World number 1 spot, overtaking Adam Scott in Oho last week. No wonder Nike pay Rory the big $.

We move onto Valhalla this week for the PGA Championship, with the vast majority of pundits noting that Rory will win again this week at prices around 5/1. They can’t tip him (it’s a steer that would be ridiculed), but all suggest that it’s Rory’s to lose. Valhalla is a long Par 71, with wide fairways which encourage the use of driver. The Nicklaus design is a second shot golf course like Jack’s other most famous design Muirfield Village – where McIlroy finished 10th and then 5th on his first 2 visits. Phil Mickelson reckons the key to Valhalla is getting the ball stopped quickly on contoured greens that are surrounded by some formidable bunkering. Those that can hit the ball long and high will thrive. Target golf – sounds like Rory!

    So what is the reality?

Well its clear that Rory McIlroy is the best golfer in the world when greens are receptive. Lee Westwood is excellent in these conditions and Phil Mickelson is exceptional, but Rory is pretty much unbeatable. Want some evidence? Well consecutive wins at TPC Boston and Crooked Stick in the 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs were on rain softened golf courses. Go back to 2011 and his US Open triumph at Congressional was on a course that was softened every evening by rain. This season Rory made headway at Wentworth after thunderstorms hit that section of Surrey, his Open win was on a receptive course that was hit by further rain during the tournament and Firestone last week was receptive from Thursday onwards. When play was halted early on Sunday for more thunderstorms, the writing was on the wall.

So in-reality if it rains at Valhalla this week, we know exactly what to expect. Rory will thrive and expect Lefty to finally show up, with Bubba, Westy and Ryan Moore in the mix. As I sit here now, the course has already been described as receptive and thunderstorms look extremely probable on Friday. In my view any other winner of the PGA Championship will have stared the Northern Irishman down to win the title and such a performance will go down in golfing legend.
