Last week the Associated Press released their Global Football 10 with Barcelona claiming the top spot in winning the Spanish league and getting to the Champions League Final.
For player of the week honors, Juventus striker Alvao Morata supplanted Lionel Messi. A great weekend in soccer concluded with Juventus eventually reaching the European final with some help from Morata’s goal, as he eliminated his former team, Real Madrid, from contention.
Marco Monteverde of News Corp. Australia said of Morata’s decisive effort, “Morata didn’t let sentiment get in the way of doing his job for Juventus against Real Madrid and then backed it up a few days later to score the winner against Inter.”
Messi’s strike against Atletico Madrid secured Barcelona’s Spanish league win, and earned himself second place for player of the week. After securing the spot in finals of Europe’s Elite competition on June 6th and Copa del Rey’s finals prior to that on May 30th, Barcelona is once again primed to make a run towards winning it all.
For player of the week, Southampton attacker Sadio Mane finished in third for pulling off the fastest hat trick ever to happen in the Premier League. Following him was Cristiano Ronaldo as he claimed the fourth spot, despite his own hat trick against Espanyol, however his three goal performance went unrewarded as Madrid needed Barcelona to lose points to Atletico in order for them to reclaim the Spanish League title.
Finishing out the top 5 finishers was Neymar after scoring twice against Bayern Munich and helping to qualify Barcelona for the Champions League finals. The other players to round out this week’s top ten were YayaToure, Domenico Berardi, Shane Long, Marc-Andre terStegen and Kevin de Bruyne.
There’s still plenty more great soccer action left as we enter the Championships with some familiar faces vying for the top spot, yet again.
